Seth Godin Rocked Me Back on My Heels

IMPACT Hiring Solutions Logo

Seth Godin once again rocked me back on my heels with his simple question why do so many people (in my universe - job seekers) seem stuck in high school mode OR non-self-determinant mode.

I wrote a tough love article on our Career and Job Search Blog to the all our job seeker followers about the need to step out of high school mode and become self-determinant in conducting an effective job search. You can read this long blog post (or should I say RANT) here.

I've written a couple other articles on this same general theme including "How is Your Job Search like Playing a High School Sport" and "Your Job Search is Predetermined"

101 Job Search Tactics to Find a Job NOW!

I’m boiling mad! I’m offended. Brad and I put in an effort that exceeds most experts in the job search space. Do we deserve grief and abuse for it? A recent commenter on my last blog posting inferred that Brad and I publish “fluff” and DO NOT provide specific tactics, techniques, tips, tools, and methods to improve your [...] Related posts:

Is Your Job Search Stuck in High School Time Warp?

Is Your Job Search an Extension of High School? One of my favorite bloggers, writers, speakers – Seth Godin, published a blog titled “On Self-determination”. After reading the article, I realized, there was a frightening metaphor for most job seekers. I wrote a previous article about this syndrome on our blog titled “Hope and Luck are [...] Related posts:

Failure Due to Culture Mismatch - Don't Fall into This Trap

IMPACT Hiring Solutions Logo

Have you ever failed due to a cultural mismatch?

Ever have one view of a company from the interview - but it turns out to be something different?

One of the greatest failure points for new hires, after the inability to deliver the expected outcomes, is a cultural mismatch.

You're NOT a bad person - You're just NOT a fit for this particular culture - value structure, pace, energy, demands, level of change, resources provided, how people communicate, what gets tolerated as dysfunctional behavior, etc.

Listen to our recent audio recording from our weekly radio show, titled Hiring Top Talent - Determining a Cultural Fit, that uploaded as a podcast to our HIRE and RETAIN Blog that talks to the issue of ensuring a strong cultural match (what most would term "fit").

Don't fall victim to taking a job in one company out of desperation and then discovering you cannot "fit" in. Another article you might want to read on this subject from our Blog is titled, "Hiring Frustration #5 - Poor Cultural Fit.

Should I Go OR Should I Stay?

There is a good career management article by Kris Parfitt on the Career Realism Blog titled "Career Question: What Do You Have At Stake?"

Many candidates start applying for jobs to "kick the tires", validate their self-worth, test whether they are being fairly compensated, or they might just want to explore whether the "grass is greener" somewhere else. We've written a few articles on underlying candidate motivations which typically lead to decisions to leave current roles. You might want to read  OR .

None of the 4 reasons listed above are valid reasons to start looking for to begin a job search.

Most candidates don't consider the "opportunity costs" of staying in a job or leaving for a new job. If you haven't yet gone through this exercise as Kris Parfitt defines various elements, then do NOT touch that button to send your resume just yet.

We've discovered that there are 3 primary reasons why candidates leave jobs - and interestingly enough - they use the same criteria to decide whether or not to take a new job. Brad I recently touched on issues of candidate motivation in our Radio Show Broadcast on LATalkRadio.com which we host every Monday at 11 AM PST. You can download this program on why most traditional  jobs ads fail (hint - they fail to capture the motivation of why top talent wants to leave their current job). Unfortunately, we have not yet posted the mp3 as a download. Look for it in the next day or two in our FREE Job Seeker Audio Library where you will find all our Radio Programs available for download.

Kris Parfitt does a good job listing what you might miss or lose if you make the wrong decision.

Effective Job Search: Find or Be Found

IMPACT Hiring Solutions Logo

Perry Newman, posted an article at the Career Rocketeer Blog  titled "There Are Your Options: 'Find Or Be Found'".

The article describes the need to leverage social media to be found rather than working so hard to find a job.

Eeffective Job search is all about the application of proper leverage in obtaining the results desired in the shortest time period.

Doesn't this apply to just about any success in life? I'm not talking about taking short-cuts or cheating. I'm talking about good ole fashioned fulcrum principles of leverage. Effective use of social media and social networking in your job search speeds the process and uncovers the hidden job market quickly.

There are hundreds of tactics you could apply, including blogging, tweeting, profiles on all the major sites, participating in forums, and so on. The list is almost endless.

One of your greatest points of leverage might be in using LinkedIn more effectively as a social media/social networking site since it is the hands-down winner when it comes to professional personal branding and networking. We wrote a couple of articles on how to Leverage your LinkedIn Profile and How to Assess/Benchmark the Quality of Your LinkedIn Profile.

Brad and I also did a radio broadcast on using LinkedIn for your Job Search in one of our popular Internet Radio Shows. You can download it from our site by clicking here to listen to the FREE Audio Program.

Social Media/Networking is a very valuable tool as part of your toolkit when it comes to conducting an effective job search. Is it a part of your tool kit? Why have you not done more to learn how to leverage your job search through social media/networking as Perry describes his own personal experience in taking a course?

No Reason NOT to Master Your Job Search

IMPACT Hiring Solutions Logo

After thousands of interviews with candidates over the last few years during this current job market depression (worst I've seen in my 25 years of recruiting, speaking, and consulting), I've come to stark realization that most job seekers HAVE NO CLUE how to conduct an effective job search in this digital age.

The most common responses I hear from executive and managerial job seekers is "I'm waiting for the recruiter to call me" or "I'm applying to positions listed on the job boards".

The game has changed - have you kept up your job hunting skills with the changing job search landscape? Probably NOT! I'll be writing an expanded post on this subject on our Career and Job Search Blog in the next day or two.

Here's the short answer as to why you have absolutely no reason (excuse, explanation, justification, or rationalization) for WHY YOU CANNOT MASTER YOUR JOB SEARCH:

Brad and I have put together in one simple blog the very best job search content from across the Internet (including our own blogs - accept the fact that we're a little biased) on job search, networking, personal branding, and using social media/networking to leverage your job search.

We're even highlighting/featuring every day the very best of the best in job search best practices. Check out featured posts in the bottom footer below.

On top of that, we're featuring those bloggers who have earned the reputation of being in the top 1% of all job search bloggers writing for the professional, managerial, and executive job seeker.

Job Search Best Practices all in one place - what more could you ask for?

Now you don't have use various blog readers, you don't have to decide who offers the best advice and content (we've already reviewed it for you), and you don't have to keep remembering to look at 30 plus different best practice blogs every day.

You can even comment on it all in one easy to access simple place.

NOW THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO MASTER YOUR JOB SEARCH AND BECOME A JOB SEARCH EXPERT!

Expanded Olympic Job Search Metaphor

IMPACT Hiring Solutions Logo

As I indicated in a previous post, I was going to expand upon the metaphor of comparing your job search to the level of athletic competition at the Olympics.

Is your Job Search like competing at the Olympics?

You can view this blog post titled, "Are You Competing at an Olympic Level in Your Job Search?"on our Career and Job Search Blog.

I also wrote an earlier article on this idea of Olympic level preparation and planning for the big event -- your job search (although at the time I didn't call it Olympic preparation). Instead, I described how most job seekers keep landing back at Square One due to inadequate job search plans and preparation. That blog post title is "Job Search is Taking Longer - Duh!"

Job Search Audio - How Recruiters Read Your Resume in 10 Seconds

IMPACT Hiring Solutions Logo

As a follow-up to our article on How Recruiters Read Resumes in 10 Seconds or Less (which by the way must of somehow gone viral since the response/review/comments almost brought down our server), Brad and I did a radio broadcast on this subject in our last Internet Radio Show on LATalkRadio.com. You can stream or download the audio by clicking here.

We took the short blog article and expanded it into almost an hour of open discussion around each point.

If you're not getting enough interviews, learn how recruiters (and human resources/hiring managers) might be screening out your resume in 10 seconds or less.

Brad and I will be offering our FREE Resume Self-Assessment Checklist very soon. Be sure to keep coming back to our home page and checking the What's New Module at the bottom of the home page.
